Wildlife viewing in Serengeti National Park is good throughout the year, but certain areas are better at specific times. The Dry season (from late June to October) offers the best wildlife viewing in general – with the wildebeest migration as its absolute highlight. The timing of the migration varies every year (the best chance of seeing it is during June and July) while the wildebeest calving is from late January to February.

What to Expect

Great game drives for a diversity of wildlife in the national parks, historical sites and Ngorongoro conservation area.

  • The Olduvai Gorge where the anthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey made many significant discoveries, contributing to the theory that human life originated in Africa.
  • The great migration of the wildebeests and Zebras. This is where you will witness the wildebeest’s migration crossing River Mara as seen on TV in the Discovery Channel. The Migration normally passes through this area from Late May to early July, the herds do cross the Grumeti River.
  • The stunning Mara River filled with Hippos and Crocodiles, cuts through this land and hosts of the greatest spectacles nature has to offer.
  • Ngorongoro Crater on world Heritage site holding a permanent population of more than 30,000 animals. As only very few of those migrate in and out of crater with its 2000 ft, high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species.
  • The East African rift valley along the Gregory rift, that offers a spectacular viewing of the escarpment.
Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Tanzania and transfer to the hotel

Arrive in Tanzania via Kilimanjaro International airport (JRO) Kilimanjaro Brothers staff will pick you up and transfer to Arusha town where you will spend the first night at Planet Lodge Hotel in Arusha.

Day 2:Tarangire national park game drive

After breakfast the driver guide will drive from the hotel to Tarangire National Park, 4 hours drive from Arusha to Tarangire, Tarangire is the third largest National park and sanctuary for and usually has large elephant population. Majestic baobab trees are interested of the park; dwarf the animals that feed beneath them.

Animals concentrate along the Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply in the area. There is a great diversity of wildlife including Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, and up to six thousand elephant.

Half day game drives in the park

After enjoying a long leisurely game drive between herds of wild animals and along miles of Africa’s seemingly endless roads, you come over a slight rise and the lodge appears almost immediately below you.

 

Day 3: Tarangire – Serengeti Game Drive

After breakfast begin a safari towards Serengeti National Park. A picnic Lunch will be provided.

On your way to Serengeti will stop at the Olduvai Gorge where the anthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey made many significant discoveries, contributing to the theory that human life originate in Africa.

After stopping for your picnic lunch on a kopje (rock outcropping) in Serengeti you will continue further into the park and proceed with a game drive and overnight at

Day 4: Serengeti - Ngorongoro Crater

Early morning game drive to see nocturnal predators returning from hunting and animals waking up in early morning light in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Continue with game-drive in Crater.

Facing the always magnificent sunsets to the west, and located at the highest point on Ngorongoro crater’s entire rim, Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp stands well over half a kilometre above the crater floor and offers unparalleled views across this enormous caldera.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you will descent into the crater for a wonderful game drive (with picnic lunch) within Ngorongoro Crater on world Heritage site holding a permanent population of more than 30,000 animals. As only very few of those migrate in and out of crater with its 2000 ft, high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species. The crater is also home of the rare black rhino almost extinct in Tanzania. With a bit of luck, you will see the “Big Five” during the game drive overnight at Planet Lodge Arusha.
