Kilimanjaro Machame Route

The Kilimanjaro Machame route is the most popular path at Kilimanjaro National Park. It approaches from the southwest and descends through Mweka. It is the route of choice for many people because it provides impressive views and a variety of habitats. Also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, with steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in supplied tents at designated campsites and eat meals either outdoors or inside a large dinning tent.

Those people climbing mount Kilimanjaro through Machame route start from Machame gate to Machame camp and proceed to Shira camp, lava tower camp, Barranco camp, Karanga valley camp, Barafu camp, Uhuru peak and descending through Millennium camp, Mweka camp and thereafter to Mweka gate.

Climbing Machame route can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is most often tackled over seven days (six nights), for a better altitude acclimatization schedule.

The success rate is significantly higher when using the seven day route. With an approximation of 62 km/ 37 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience, but plenty of first time trekker use the route as well and do just fine.

Machame route Distance & Elevation

It covers a distance of 62km or 37 miles. Climbing mount Kilimanjaro using Machame route can be done for minimum of 6 days or 7 days but we recommended Machame route 7 days because you can increase your chances of success to reach the summit. Both options include a climb high, sleep low acclimatization day.

There is no technical climb when climbing Mount Kilimanjaro using Machame route. Though it’s demerits such as having the higher level of difficulty when climbing and the most popular camping route thus making it more crowded .

On the other hand Machame route is very scenic with varied scenery, relatively low cost and a higher success rate than Marangu route.

How hard is the Machame route?

The Machame route is comparative to the other six routes. Well, it isn’t easy to state how hard a route is, especially as the things that might make a Kilimanjaro climb ‘hard’ can vary from person to person. Generally speaking, the Machame route is considered a more challenging climb than others. For starters, it covers more ground, having more ups and downs than other routes. This means it requires more energy per day than other trails. That said, the route is not technically difficult.

It’s also important to note that while it’s more physically demanding than other Kilimanjaro routes, the seven-day Machame route has a very good acclimatization profile. This is because it includes opportunities to climb high and then sleep low, which are important in helping the body to adjust to the increased elevation. Proper acclimatization increases your chances of summiting.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Machame Route

Machame route known as the Whiskey route is now the most popular route on the mountain. Machame route approaches from the southwest and descends through Mweka. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro through Machame route feels prestige as this Machame route is harder there is no technical climb when climbing Mount Kilimanjaro using Machame route.
