Choosing the best route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is a crucial decision that can significantly impact your experience. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, offers several routes, each with its own unique features, challenges, and scenic beauty. The popular routes include Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, and Northern Circuit. Factors to consider when choosing a route include the duration of the climb, level of difficulty, acclimatization opportunities, scenic variety, and crowd levels. Understanding the pros and cons of each route will help you select the one that aligns best with your fitness level, preferences, and trekking goals, ensuring a safe and memorable adventure to the summit.
The Machame trail ranks as the second most favored route on Kilimanjaro, commencing in the lush tropical rainforest on the southern slope. Opting for the seven-day journey is advisable for beginners seeking an enhanced acclimatization profile. Numerous group climbs organized by Kilimanjaro Brothers follow the Machame Route. Read More
Embarking from Kilimanjaro's western side, the Lemosho Route begins at a secluded trailhead. Notable features include the renowned Shira Plateau and Cathedral Peak, reaching 3,962m (13,000 feet), marking the summit of Kilimanjaro's western slope. Regarded as providing optimal acclimatization, the Lemosho Route is considered by our experts to be among the top choices for both group and individual treks, if not the very best. Read More
Marangu winds its way along the Eastern slope of Kilimanjaro. Embraced by over 30% of Kilimanjaro climbers in 2023, it stands as the most favored route. Unlike other paths where hikers camp in tents, Marangu offers shared wooden huts for overnight stays, accommodating 4-10 people each. These huts prove advantageous, especially during the rainy season. Additionally, Marangu is unique as the sole route using the same trail for both ascent and descent. Read More
Rongai stands as the exclusive route on Kilimanjaro's northern side, in proximity to the Kenyan border. Journeying through a picturesque pine tree forest, this less-traveled path offers an excellent option for Kilimanjaro climbs at any time. The descent aligns with the eastern Marangu route, providing hikers with breathtaking views of the eastern expanse of Kilimanjaro. Read More
The Umbwe Route poses a greater challenge due to its steeper initial trail, making it suitable for those in excellent physical condition. This route accelerates climbers to higher camps more swiftly than others, underscoring the importance of prior acclimatization. Similar to the Machame route, it traverses a captivating rainforest where colobuses and blue monkeys can be observed. Read More
The Northern Circuit, Kilimanjaro's lengthiest route, commences on the western slope, encircling the cone and ascending to the summit from the west. The descent follows the southern slope. While offering trekkers a panoramic four-faced view of the mountain, this impressive route omits certain attractions like Dendrosenecio plants and the Barranco Wall. Read More
Kilimanjaro doesn’t demand expert athleticism, but a good fitness level is essential. Regular cardiovascular and strength training, along with hiking and endurance exercises, can enhance your preparedness.
Acclimatization is crucial due to the altitude. Opt for a slow ascent, consider a longer trek duration, and incorporate altitude-related exercises to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
Essential gear includes proper hiking boots, layered clothing for varying temperatures, a reliable backpack, a sleeping bag suitable for low temperatures, trekking poles, and high-altitude medication, among others.
Yes, guided climbs are highly recommended. Experienced guides provide essential support, ensure safety, and help with logistics. They also contribute to a more enjoyable and successful climb.
Mental preparation is vital. Understand the challenges, stay positive, and be mentally resilient. Visualize success, practice mindfulness, and cultivate a mindset that embraces both the physical and mental aspects of the climb.
We generally advise that the best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the warmest and driest times of year, from December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October. However, although these are considered to be the best times to climb the mountain in terms of weather

EXCELLENT Based on 278 reviews Getaway5692622023-11-19Verified Excellent and Amazing 8-Day African Safari in Tanzania with Kilimanjaro Brothers, Eli Nassary and Decha Hamphrey Tanzania is an amazing and incredible country in Africa. We had the time of our lives, a dream come true! We fell in love with its people, the Tanzanians. They are very kind, made us feel at home and always saying “Hakuna matata”. We selected Kilimanjaro Brothers as our tour company for our 8-day safari and we were not disappointed. The private and personalized tour program was very well planned. Kilimanjaro Brothers assigned Eli Nassary and Decha Hamphrey as our support team. We were very fortunate to have Eli as our safari guide and driver. He made sure that we didn’t miss anything and he found ways to make our experience more memorable at the Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks and at the Ngorongoro Crater. We were able to see animals crossing the Mara river, as part of the great migration, just a few hours after we arrived at the Serengeti. This was partly made possible by Eli’s excellent communication with other tour guides because they all share information about animal sightings at the parks. When we were not able to visit one of the parks, Eli quickly found something interesting that we could do. We cannot miss to recognize that Eli has an eagle eye to see animals from afar. We didn’t see a kill but we learned it’s not that easy and patience is key to enjoy the wild life. Definitely, we want to comeback. Decha, on the hand, is a very talented photographer. With his state of the art camera, he captured our unforgettable memories of Africa with professionalism and high quality work. The photos and videos that we received are far better than the ones we took using our iPhones. Familyof-four E2023-09-03Verified Trip of a lifetime, made better by this team of guides. What a trip! From being met at the airport, accompanied up the mountain and fed and watered, everything was organised well. George introduced the trip the evening before and then we were accompanied by the knowledgeable, cheerful and encouraging guides. A special shout out to Paulo, Rafael, Richard and Eli who ensured we were fully informed on the itinerary, had amazing food and kept us going at an appropriate pace. We beat the odds as a group, with 13/15 reaching the summit. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Kilimanjaro brothers. They have kit which can be borrowed, although we took our own. Mark H2023-01-11Verified Kilimanjaro Climb with Trekking Hero We had the pleasure of climbing Kilimanjaro on the Lemosho Route with our great guides Side (pronounced see Dee) and Martin from Trekking Hero. They did a masterful job in ensuring we climbed in a way to optimize acclimatization. The Trekking Hero team also did a great job in setting up camps, providing excellent meals and wonderful support. The one thing I’d recommend is to get the private toilet tents since the public tourist toilets are just holes in the cement floor, are typically filthy and doors to stalls don’t properly close. Emily B2022-12-04Verified BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! tldr: GO UP KILI WITH KILI BROTHERS I cannot say enough about the quality of my experience up Kilimanjaro with this company. I did the eight-day Lemosho route in November, and I had an absolutely phenomenal trek. Round-trip transportation was arranged for me from the airport to Moshi and back, and George, the owner of the company, was waiting for me at my hotel when I arrived. There are numerous things that makes Kili Brothers different from other companies. Kili Brothers is owned by brothers who used to be porters and are also guides themselves. With these personal experiences, they create fair labor conditions for all porters and guides. Additionally, they pay all employees fair wages. The mattresses and tents supplied are of high quality and cleanliness, as is the equipment available for rent. The food used for cooking is fresh and high-quality—during longer treks, a second team of porters will meet the cooks to replenish dwindling fresh food stocks, keeping hikers well-fed the entire journey. The porters are all incredibly kind and friendly, and they love chatting with the clients. The guides are incredibly well-trained and experienced, and they are phenomenal at sensing the needs of their clients throughout the entire journey. As a 21-year-old woman traveling in Africa by myself for the first time, safety was a paramount concern in finding my your company. The entire Kili Brothers team was cognizant of this fact and made sure I felt safe and secure at all times. Thank you to George, my guides Abel and Richard, and the entire Kili Brothers team for making my Kili summit a trip I will never forget! AmandaLeeLingwei2022-10-21Verified Unforgettable Tanzanian Experience with Kilimanjaro Brothers! 8 days Lemosho & 5 days Safari exceeded expectations! Value for Money, Honest, Reliable, Superb Hospitality! Back in 2020, we liaised with George on both the hike expedition and safari tour. Finally travel resumed and we made the maiden trip this August 2022. Kilimanjaro brothers took care of everything from the minute we landed until the very last day. The hike was very well organised and we had the best crew of 12, ensuring our success to the peak - guided by Sanka and Arcardi. Camping equipments were sturdy, windproof and clean. They even provided us 4 inch thick mattress and we couldn’t be more comfortable in the mountain throughout the 8 days. The portable toilet was also sanitized and cleaned daily. Our chef, Willy and waiter, Ema totally rised up to the occasion and treated us with scrumptious meals daily. The cucumber soup was memorable. Honestly, we were mindblowned by the amount of nutritious food served. We wouldn’t have done it without the guidance of Sanka and Arcardi, who are both highly experienced. From pacing, clothes layering and ensuring we consume enough water – their mission was to get us to the roof of Africa safely. Highly recommended to always go with the locals as they know best! One dream, one team! Safari was one heck of an adventure and we couldn’t be happier and fortunate to have Elly Nassary as our safari guide. He kept us entertained throughout and shared with us stories about the animal kingdom. Very knowledgeable and a brilliantly skilled land cruiser driver. Of course, we were super lucky to catch the Great Migration of Serengeti with his amazing driving skills and awesome prediction. If you’re going for a safari adventure, ask for Elly Nassary! You won’t be disappointed! Feel free to request for a beer flight, throw in the list of animals you would want to tick off your bucketlist, go running after some wildebeest, check into the TZ/KY border – Elly is always up for challenge. Best Tanzanian experience we could have asked for! Thank you - Kilimanjaro Brothers, George, Sanka, Arcardi, Elly, Willy, Ema, and the whole team for making our trip such a memorable one! Asante sana and we couldn’t stop raving about the trip to our families, friends and everyone that we crossed path with! Felilili2022-10-20Verified Best decision ever with Kilimanjaro Brothers, no regrets! 8 Days Lemosho + 5 days Safari Reliable, fuss-free, excellent end-to-end service - delivered. If you are looking for the right company for Kilimanjaro or Tanzania, Kilimanjaro Brother is THE one! As a 2-girls travel group, we are beyond thankful to find Kilimanjaro Brothers, a local company that not only provide A-class top notch service, but for their kindness, experiences, hospitality, and very reasonable-fair pricing. One team, one dream, all the way to the top! That’s the spirit of the Kilimanjaro Brothers (KB). We chose KB because we wanted to support a local company. We did 8 days Lemosho and 5 days Safari (Serengeti and Ngorongoro) in Aug 2022 – excellent weather! For those having a hard time choosing a route to climb Klimanjaro, Lemosho route is super scenic! It has a good acclimatization profile – hike high, sleep low. Highly recommend! Also, Aug is a good time for the migration at the Mara River, which we were extremely blessed to catch it!!! Top 3 reasons why you should choose Kilimanjaro Brothers: 1. Reliable, Safe and Experienced Crew - George and his crew are very experienced. They made us feel extremely safe travelling in Tanzania. Camping equipment provided are good quality and made our trip so comfortable and enjoyable. Our lead and assistant guides, Sanka and Acardi are extremely experienced and patient. Sanka checked our gears one-by-one prior to the climb to ensure we are well equipped. They paced us from Day 1 and advised us what to do/ wear every day to ensure successful summit. Listen to them! They even helped us with our bags on summit day. We couldn’t have done it without our guides and the crew. - Our safari guide, Elly, is the go-to guide for safari! He has more than 15 years of experience under his belt and is extremely knowledgeable about the animal kingdom. We learnt so much from Elly! Just challenge and give him your long list of requests, and he will try his best to hunt them for you ;P 2. Excellent Service and Personalized Experience - One of the main reasons of us choosing KB is the personalized customer experience. George is very responsive and helpful. He advised and helped us plan/ customized our Kilimanjaro climb and Safari trip. As George was a guide and porter himself, he is a walking Tanzania google! If you have any doubt, feel free to ask him anything about travelling in Tanzania, from packing list, to vaccination, etc, and he will try his best to help you. - We had the best crew and service on the mountain, beyond our expectations! The crew always find the best spot to pitch our tents – best view, away from the main crowd (quieter). Chef Willy is an excellent cook and fed us very well, everyday! You get very balanced and delicious meals. Our butler, Ema is a fun chap. We learnt Swahili and the Jambo Kilimanjaro song along the way. The crew is a fun bunch. They made our camping experience super enjoyable! 3. Affordable price point - Support the local community! KB is very transparent with their pricing and costs. They gave us a very affordable and fair quotation compared to other companies that we reached out to. In return, we received more than what we expected in terms of quality and service. Once again, a million Asante-sana to George, Sanka, Acardi, Elly and the rest of the crew for making our dreams come true and to show us your beautiful country. Hands down, best decision ever to go with KB, no regrets! Wishing you all the best and hope our paths cross again in the future! :) Zamir Hussain2022-09-15Verified Thank you George and his Kilimanjaro Brothers for our Safari & Kilimanjaro Climb A group of friends who had previously climbed Kilimanjaro with George’s company recommended to us, we weren’t disappointed one bit. Right from the outset a year in advance when planning our 2 day safari to the Tarangire and Ngorongoro national parks and the 7 day Machame Kilimanjaro route, George was absolutely superb. Always available to answer our queries night and day. No pressure whatsoever and when George face timed a few times, I knew this is the right local company to venture with. There is no middle man to haggle with and pay more than what we need to. Our once in a lifetime journey and expedition took effect from 1st September 2022 whereby we were warmly greeted by George and his wonderful team at Kilimanjaro airport. We opted for the 2day 1night safari at the beginning of our trip and absolutely thrilled with this decision because we enjoyed the safari so much and even saw the elusive black rhino whilst at the Ngorongoro Crater, truly spectacular. We also saw a famil6 of lions, very closeup up of a family of elephants grazing, wilder beast, gazelles, antelopes, warthogs, a python up in a tree, hippos, zebras and many more. We had lunch right in the heart of the crater - an u forgettable experience organised only by George and his team. The safari was followed by the 7day Machame route to Mount Kilimanjaro, what an experience. Truly tiring but if you’re a regular hiker and fit/active then you should be okay to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Our three guides, Eli, Justin and Mgosi had all the skills, experience and patience and ensured they went at a very pole pole rate meaning slow slow in Swahili. The entire crew from the guides to the chef and porters were amazing. Our breakfast, lunch and dinner were of quality and taste and prepared freshly at each campsite. A special mention to Barakah who served us our meals and also replenished our water each evening and morning, thank you. All six of us successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro with the added bonus of the full moon summit which we pre planned with George a year in advance. Overall, we had the most fantastic time of our lives which was only possible due to George and his wonderful team. The certificate-presentation ceremony was superb and all the crew were present with us. If you are planning a safari or Mount Kilimanjaro then George and his Kilimanjaro Brothers company is the one. Thank you so much George and crew for our once in a lifetime experience. Rajeev W2022-08-17Verified Unbelievable experience I had a great experience climbing Kilimanjaro, thanks to George and his amazing crew. The guides (Richard and Eli) and porters at Kilimanjaro Brothers were extremely kind, encouraging and helpful, and I cannot thank them enough for their support and generosity of spirit. Richard did a thorough “gear check” the evening before we started to ensure that we had everything we needed. Not only that, he generously gave me his trekking poles when one of mine malfunctioned. The hike was exhilarating but difficult, and I could not have done it without the incredible assistance of our amazing guides and porters. Also, the food they served on the mountain was plentiful and delicious. The memory of my Kilimanjaro trek will be in my heart forever, and I will never forget my wonderful friends at Kilimanjaro Brothers who helped me make it to the top. A huge "Asante sana" to all of them. They are simply amazing! Aleksander M2022-03-27Verified Very well organized Kilimanjaro trek I joined a group trek organised by Kilimanjaro Brothers and the overall experience was very positive. Highlights: - The company representative (George) was very helpful with providing relevant information before my arrival. The hotel was also arranged for me before and after the trek. - I got my own (3-person) tent for no extra charge. It was really comfortable having the whole tent to myself. A thin foam mattress was also included. - The guide (Eli) seemed very experienced and took good care of the group. He proposed that we do the summit push a day earlier, but start at 3am, instead of the usual start at midnight. This was a great idea, as it was much warmer when walking up, and at the summit we were all by ourselves, without other groups! This also meant that on the summit day we didn’t have to make a big descent, but we just returned to the base camp. The remaining descent was done on the following day. - The food was quite tasty and varied, perhaps the breakfast porridge could be improved. The waiter service, e.g. having warm tea brought to the tent in the morning, was very welcomed as well. - On the last day we were caught in a massive rainfall. As we were quite close to the end, our guide arranged a car to pick us up, so we didn’t get fully soaked in the rain. - It was possible to pay by card. Lowlights: - I decided to rent a sleeping bag from the company, as the sleeping bag I own is a 3-season one, and for Kiliminajaro a 4-season one is strongly recommended. However, the sleeping bag I got had a comfort temperature rating of +10 degrees Celsius, which is definitely not suitable for sub-zero temperatures of Kilimanjaro (and was worse than the rating of my own sleeping bag). I only realised this when we were already on the mountain, but upon later complaint I was refunded the costs of renting the sleeping bag. - The hygienic conditions could be improved. We were given one small bowl of warm water in the morning and in the evening, and it was very difficult to do any personal hygiene with this amount of water. In the private toilet there was soap, but there wasn’t any water to use it with. After I requested it, the crew started putting a bowl of water next to the toilet, which was an improvement. However, it was quite difficult to use (the same bowl of water had to be used by multiple people for washing hands multiple times), so I think using a bucket with a small tap could be an improvement. - Before starting the trek I saw a lot of videos of porters singing local songs to motivate the hikers. That was missing in our group. Alice S2021-11-10Verified Kilimanjaro Lemosho route with Kili Brothers Short version: We had a good experience and recommend them. We got a good price and are very happy with the service and efficiency of George who helped us arrange it. Long version: I had contacted George a few weeks before we arrived to tanzania and we haggled a bit about the price and came to a good agreement. When we finally booked everything worked out beautifully. We got picked up from the airport, went to their office to pick up the gear we needed. Met our main guide Eli and they drove us to the hotel where we got a good and long briefing about the 7 day lemosho route we were taking. After the briefing they checked out our clothes and all our gear to make sure we had what we needed for the mountain. Then the day after we started. It was only me and my fiance on the trip. We had 2 guides, Eli and Sanka, one chef William, one server/porter Ima and 8 porters. The food was good and plentiful! For dinner soup (william really knows his soupd, delicious), maincourse and often fruit for dessert. We got tea and gingertea everyday. We could choose hot chocolate in the morning if we wanted to. We had hot water for washing every day morning and when we arrived to camp except for in basecamp. The tent was very roomy. Unfortunately they had chosen a dry season tent for us and the rainseason was just starting so the outer tent leaked and sometimes even the inner tent which was not so good. The tent wasn't put up optimally one of the days where it leaked in. I told the guides who made sure that the tent was put up better the following days. Also the waterproof bags that we had our sleepingbags and sleeping mats in was not really waterproof. One of the evenings they were moist. Not enought to make it unusable but enough for me to get annoyed. At two times the tents was placed so that the rain risked to flow under the tent, but Ima and one of the porters Pasoa went out in the cold rain digging with their hands to make a little canal for the water to go to instead. The guides were helpful and listened to our opinions about tempo and so forth. During summit night our summitporter turned back after just 1 hour and didn't come back. Very odd. But our guides took the emergency equipment instead and Sanka even took my daybag when it was getting to tough for me to carry it. And yes, it was tough walking 6 hours in the dark, up up up! How Eli did it I do not know but we arrived to Uhuru peak 3 minutes before sunrise! Perfect timing. We were the 2nd group to the top, so the first group was too early to the sunrise on the peak and the ones after us came too late. When we arrived down again, the porters treated us like king & queen. Put out our chairs, dusted us off and even took of my gaiters and shoes! Service! Almost felt embarrassed! After the 7 days trek we all gathered and had a beer/soda together. It was very nice. Ofcours the tipping part is always very awkward for us scandinavians since it's not really a part of our culture but George made it to a less awkward experience. George promised to make sure that the right tent for the season is picked and that the sleepingbags and sleepingmats really are in waterproof bags in the future and he took the feedback very professionally! Conclusion! A great experience with Kilimanjaro brothers!
Reaching the summit isn’t the sole aim; it’s about employing your strength and tenacity to impact the lives of those in greatest need. Each upward step is a stride toward creating a better world and unforgettable experience.
Several renowned charitable organizations have undertaken ascents alongside the Kilimanjaro Brothers.
